Corsair Announces Neutron 4th Generation SSDs with New Link-A-Media Devices Controller

by Mark Kidd

Corsair announced the Neutron SSD series, which will be the first consumer SSDs to feature the LM87800 6Gb/s SSD controller from Link-A-Media Devices (LAMD). All Neutron models will incorporate LAMD on-the-fly error correction and NAND management technologies to improve the flash memory endurance. The Neutron Series GTX drives also include adaptive DSP technology for improved performance with compressed and non-compressible data.

Neutron Series GTX SSDs will be available in capacities of 120GB, 240GB and 480GB. The GTX SSDs are designed with toggle NAND flash memory to deliver up to 90,000 random read and write IOPs (input/output operations per second) and sequential speeds of up to 555 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write, according to Corsair benchmarks. The standard Neutron Series models, available in 120GB and 240GB, provide up to 90,000 random read IOPs and 85,000 random write IOPs with sequential speeds of up to 555 MB/s read and 370 MB/s write.

The new SSDs are designed with a standard 2.5" form factor and 7mm height that fits most notebook and slim notebook designs. The drives also come with a 3.5" adapter to facilitate mounting in desktop PC drive bays.

Availability

Neutron Series SSDs are expected to be available in July. Pricing will be announced upon product release.
