Dell announced a new software release that will enhance the security, performance, and efficiency of its PowerProtect data protection portfolio. This new release affects PowerProtect Data Manager and PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance (check out our recent in-depth review), PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, and PowerProtect DD Operating System and addresses the challenges associated with multicloud data sprawl, operational complexity, and cyber resiliency.

PowerProtect Data Manager

New features for PowerProtect Data Manager are designed to enhance storage integrations, recovery control, and virtualization.

Dell recently announced native integration between PowerStore and PowerProtect appliances so customers can directly back up PowerStore data to PowerProtect DD. The integration is enhanced by PowerProtect Data Manager, which provides volume and volume group snapshot backups directly to PowerProtect appliances from PowerStore arrays using the Data Manager UI.

Application owners can use Data Manager to centrally manage and orchestrate backups and recoveries for multiple PowerStore clusters. Storage snapshots on PowerStore are encrypted and remain encrypted when copied and stored on PowerProtect appliances, ensuring data immutability based on retention lock capabilities.

PowerProtect Data Manager has added Recovery Orchestration for VMware VMs giving organizations the ability to create secure, flexible, and reusable restore plans tailored to their specific needs.

PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance

The PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance updates focus on security, supportability, and workload capabilities.

The PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance now supports cyber recovery. Customers can store critical business data in a PowerProtect DD-based cyber vault, either on-prem or in the cloud, to facilitate orchestrated recovery checks and restoration of backup and appliance configuration data.

Data Manager Appliance also gets retention lock compliance. Now, customers can configure storage units and protection policies to enable compliance-mode retention locking to ensure data immutability, aligning with regulatory standards. Security for the appliance has been extended with the introduction of Microsoft multifactor authentication (MFA), adding that extra layer of challenge beyond usernames and passwords.

The new software release gives customers the ability to replicate data to and from the cloud using PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition on-premises or APEX Protection Storage for Public Cloud for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud, ensuring data availability and protection across diverse multicloud environments.

PowerProtect Cyber Recovery Gets Enhanced Visibility

Enhancements to PowerProtect Cyber Recovery focus on an improved customer experience, total cost of ownership, and performance to protect data against cyberattacks. Cyber Recovery offers enhanced visibility of PowerProtect DD storage capacity and provides even more granularity of vault operations, enhancing monitoring, alerting, and reporting capabilities.

There is also a new Configure Dashboard to simplify license management for CyberSense, streamlining the setup and configuration of licenses. In a post-attack workflow, malware file detection in backup copies can detect and remove latent malware files from backups before data is restored to production environments.

The ability to read and analyze Hyper-V VM snapshots created by NetWorker and Commvault SAP HANA backup images to detect corruption has also been added.

PowerProtect DDOS Adds Smart Scale Workload Management

The quarterly release of the PowerProtect DD Operating System for PowerProtect appliances includes Smart Scale workload management, enabling automatic identification and inclusion of affinity groups when migrating between appliances.

PowerProtect DDOS updates also expand the supported virtual ecosystem with support for KVM VirtIO disks with PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition and enhanced cloud security of APEX Protection Storage for Public Cloud with support for retention lock compliance on AWS.
