Hitachi Vantara, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501) announced a host of updates and enhancements at Next 2018. We covered some of their appliance updates here. This article will cover three of their other major announcements; Hitachi Enterprise Cloud (HEC) Container Platform enhancements, Smart Data Center updates, and the addition of Lumada Maintenance Insights to their Lumada portfolio.

The first of the major updates Hitachi Vantara announced at Next 2018 is Hitachi Enterprise Cloud (HEC) Container Platform adding support for multi-cloud management. Vantara expects this to reduce costs and time to value by helping customers manage multiple cloud implementations simultaneously. Customers get improved visibility of private, hybrid and public cloud deployments with the ability to run application workloads in these disparate environments without the need to adapt applications to proprietary public cloud APIs, interfaces and methods, reducing lock-in concerns. It should also save IT teams time, and businesses money, by providing a single API instead of several. Additionally, Hitachi Vantara is partnering with Aqua Security to help companies mitigate risks.

Hitachi Vantara also announced exciting enhancements to its existing Smart Data Center solution. Smart Data Center is a complete end-to-end subscription service. It is intended to manage global data center service health, capacity, performance, and cooling. Hitachi Vantara is partnering with Vigilent to help deliver the Smart Data Center cooling optimization module. Vigilent technology uses machine learning, IoT temperature sensors, and closed-loop control to enable Smart Data Center to monitor and analyze data center cooling, self-correct temperature and airflow issues, and provide IT administrators with improved operational control. Smart Data Center is also getting improvements to its SAN resource optimization and automated provisioning of heterogeneous storage assets.

The third major announcement from Hitachi Vantara at Next 2018 was the introduction of Lumada Maintenance Insights to their Lumada portfolio. These data-driven, artificial intelligence (AI)-based internet-of-things (IoT) solutions use prescriptive and predictive algorithms that help customers anticipate breakdowns and guide them on necessary maintenance repairs. Lumada Maintenance Insights incorporates machine learning models that can be customized for specific assets and operational workflows. Common customer pain points addressed by Lumada Maintenance Insights solutions include:

  • Equipment downtime: unplanned outages that impact key operating metrics.
  • First-time fix failures: higher costs for rework and lost production.
  • Excess parts inventory: wrong parts in the wrong places at the wrong times.
  • Low customer satisfaction: a decrease in maintenance contract renewal rates.
