InterModal Data Introduces Disaggregated Data Storage Software Solution

by Adam Armstrong

Today InterModal Data unveiled its disaggregated data storage software solution, the InterModal Data solution. The solution is built to deliver scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness achieved by companies such as Facebook, Amazon, and Google. The solution is system software that is able to disaggregate commodity hardware architecture, similar to HPE’s composable infrastructure. In other words, this solution will enable much more efficient usage of resources, which in turn can reduce the amount of hardware needed and the costs associated with them.

A lot of enterprises are facing challenges and need to constantly change and adapt. In order for companies to stay flexible they need their underlying infrastructure to be flexible as well. InterModal Data’s solution physically separates the storage controllers from the shelf, creating IO nodes and capacity nodes that are logically connected over Ethernet. The solution allocates resources based on workloads to meet the given requirements. InterModal Data says that their software can support millions of workloads and billions of files. The software also governs the use of both RAM and Flash caches on every node.

This new disaggregated architecture can save industries a great deal on costs (InterModal Data estimates between 4-10 times reduction in costs depending on workload) and allow them to scale at a very granular increment. This approach can eliminate bottlenecks while increasing the utilization of all components including CPU, RAM, SSD, and HDD. If requirements change, the software can be changed to reallocate resources to meet the new requirements.

InterModal Data qualifies all hardware to ensure quality and predictability, and offers a perpetual software license so customers can buy future generations of hardware directly from qualified suppliers without having to repurchase the software.
