iXsystems Updates TrueNAS Scale with HA and SMB Clustering

by Harold Fritts

iXsystems announced the availability of the second release of TrueNAS SCALE for scale-out storage and open hyper-convergence. TrueNAS SCALE features High Availability (HA) and support for SMB clustering, and, with new functionality in TrueCommand, wizards are available to make it easy to create SMB clusters. Built on Linux, TrueNAS SCALE supports Docker Containers, Kubernetes, KVM, and Scale-out OpenZFS with Open Source economics.

Angelfish, the second major update to TrueNAS SCALE, has been tested by more than 20,000 users in the four months since its release. The Angelfish update adds high availability on TrueNAS M-Series systems for scale-out storage, VM, and Container workloads. In the event of a storage controller failure or a controller is taken down for maintenance, the other controller can reliably provide all services.

TrueNAS SCALE offers SMB Clusters, NFS File Sharing, iSCSI Block Storage, S3 Object API integration, and Cloud Sync for interoperability with public cloud storage. SMB clustering gives clients the ability to connect to a cluster via any SMB node in the cluster for access to hundreds of petabytes of capacity and terabits of bandwidth. TrueNAS SCALE can be installed to run on a single node with the option to scale out to multiple clustered nodes.

TrueCommand, a single pane management solution for managing TrueNAS Open Source and Enterprise systems, can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud. TrueCommand 2.2 has been enhanced to use the TrueNAS SCALE APIs and clustered SMB with wizards for creating SMB clusters.

Additional improvements include a reworked statistics engine for added performance, improved certificate handling for simplicity, and improved middleware for improved error handling and testing frameworks. TrueCommand 2.2, available now for testing,  is set for release in mid-July.

TrueNAS is a free download for Open Storage software. TrueNAS offers systems and software versions for a turnkey solution that provides features and support suitable for enterprise-class environments. iX has not been hampered by current supply chain issues and has the inventory to deliver complete TrueNAS appliances.
