KIOXIA Targets OEM Notebooks with Power-Efficient BG7 Client SSDs

Client SSD  ◇  Consumer

KIOXIA has expanded its client storage portfolio with the introduction of the BG7 Series solid-state drives, making this the first time the company has brought its latest BiCS FLASH generation 8 3D flash memory into a client-focused product. With capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB, the BG7 Series is designed for PC OEMs building commercial and consumer notebooks and desktops, with a focus on power efficiency and total cost of ownership.

The BG7 Series uses KIOXIA’s 8th-generation BiCS FLASH alongside its CMOS Directly Bonded to Array (CBA) technology. With the CMOS circuitry bonded directly to the memory array, data travels a shorter path, helping improve both performance and power efficiency. The result is storage that brings the advantages of this new flash generation into mainstream client PCs, rather than limiting those gains to higher-end or enterprise-focused products.

The BG7 Series is part of the current generation of PCIe 4.0 client SSDs, with sequential read speeds up to 7,000 MB/s and random read/write performance up to 1 million IOPS, depending on capacity. Compared with the earlier BG6 Series, KIOXIA cites a roughly 10% increase in sequential read performance and up to a 16% improvement in random workloads.

Power efficiency is also improved via CBA technology. Compared to the last-gen BG6 Series, KIOXIA indicates an improvement of around 67% in sequential write power efficiency. For thin-and-light notebooks and other mobile systems, this improvement can noticeably extend battery life during sustained use. The BG7 Series also supports NVMe 2.0d, giving OEMs greater flexibility and control over how the drive behaves compared with earlier NVMe versions.

Target Applications Client notebooks, AI PCs, desktops

In addition to the existing M.2 Type 2230 and Type 2280 options, the series introduces a new Type 2242 model. This additional size allows system designers more flexibility when working with compact layouts or unconventional mounting constraints, particularly in smaller notebooks or specialized desktop designs.

As with previous entries in KIOXIA’s value-oriented client lineup, the BG7 Series relies on Host Memory Buffer support rather than onboard DRAM. By drawing on system memory to handle internal drive operations, this approach keeps costs down while still delivering typical client-workload performance. For systems that require it, the drives also support self-encrypting functionality through the TCG Opal 2.01 standard.

Availability

Samples are currently with select PC OEMs, and the drives are scheduled to be publicly shown at CES 2026, January 6 to 8.
