Today EMC has announced new products and solutions to support the Data Lake Foundation, leading with the new Isilon HD400 NAS platform that offers a 2.5x increase in maximum capacity over the previous generation. This increase allows for Isilon-based EMC Data Lake deployments with cluster sizes up to 50PB. EMC has also announced an updated OneFS 7.2 operating system, Data Lake support for OpenStack Swift, and a new Data Lake certification for integrating with Hortonworks analytics.

The Data Lake approach is to create a hardware and software platform that can consolidate data and application storage while providing hooks for in-place analytic engines. When EMC announced the Isilon S210 and X410 in July 2014, it was a key moment in the evolution of the Data Lake ecosystem. The S210 and X410 were designed Data Lake in mind, including support for Hadoop analytics and other demanding enterprise applications. That launch made EMC the first among scale-out NAS providers to natively integrate support for the Hadoop filesystem, including an Isilon + Hadoop “Data Lake Hadoop Bundle” for streamlined deployments.

The new HD400 will be offered in a dense 3.2PB/rack form factor and will be able to leverage updates to the OneFS operating system that are rolling out in the new OneFS 7.2, including support for the Hadoop Distributed Filesystem 2.3 and HDFS 2.4. Data Lake deployments will now be able to take advantage of new support for OpenStack Swift in order to provide storage for file and object data, and EMC also announced a new certification for Hortonworks analytics solution in Data Lake environments. The Hortonworks certification comes in addition to existing support for analytics solutions from Cloudera and Pivotal.
