VMware has announced that vSphere 8 is available for download. More than just the initial release announced during VMware Explore, this is a major release with improvements to bring the benefits of cloud to on-premises workloads, improve performance through DPUs and GPUs, and accelerate innovation with an enterprise-ready integrated Kubernetes runtime.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of AWS EC2 Trn1 instances. Powered by AWS-designed Trainium chips, Trn1 instances are specifically designed for the high-performance training of machine learning models (in the cloud) with Amazon indicating a reduction of 50% in “cost-to-train” savings when compared to similar GPU-based instances.
OpenStack Zed, the 26th version of the open source cloud infrastructure software, gets released featuring enhanced security and expanded hardware enablement and is available for download. Concurrently, OpenStack introduced Venus, a log aggregation service for large deployments, and Skyline, a dashboard that delivers an improved web UI.
In a major growth announcement, IBM said it would transfer Red Hat Ceph Storage (RHCS) and Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation (ODF) to the IBM Storage Hybrid Cloud Data Storage Platform. According to IBM, Red Hat Storage associates will transfer to IBM, indicating no plans to reduce staffing.
