Permabit today announced the general availability of its new Albireo SANblox, a 1U data efficiency appliance for Fibre Channel primary storage. SANblox utilizes Permabit’s Albireo Virtual Data Optimizer (VDO) and HIOPS Compression software to implement inline data efficiency processing that can be selectively applied to data that can benefit from deduplication or compression as it is written to the array.

Permabit is positioning SANblox as a means for OEMs with Fibre Channel array offerings and support commitments to offer inline deduplication and compression by using a modular architecture that allows SANblox integrations to the leverage existing management features of arrays such as thin provisioning, snapshots and replication. According to Permabit, a SANblox deployment has been able to process up to 230,000 random 4K IOPS during its manufacturer benchmarks. Multiple SANblox appliances can be used to scale performance.

In addition to Permabit's contributions, the appliance is built with technology from Emulex and Red Hat. Permabit has tested SANblox with block-based storage arrays including: EMC VNX, EMC VMAX, Dell SC800 series, HDS HUS, NetApp E-Series, and the Huawei OceanStor T series. It is supported on storage devices that are certified for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 as well as Emulex and QLogic HBAs and Brocade and Cisco Fibre Channel switches.

SANblox looks to be one way to instantly offer data compression technologies to arrays that do not have them built-in. This of course aligns well with our piece yesterday highlighting the need, especially for tiering/caching all-flash configurations, to have such data services to protect flash endurance.
