QNAP TDS-h2489FU R2: Flagship NAS for Demanding Workloads

by Lyle Smith

QNAP TDS-h2489FU R2 is an all-flash NAS with Xeon CPUs, U.2 NVMe, and ZFS, designed for virtualization and data-heavy environments.

QNAP has released its updated flagship enterprise NAS: the TDS-h2489FU R2, a 2U rackmount system designed for demanding data workloads, real-time applications, and environments requiring performance and scalability. This all-flash model builds on the previous generation with dual Intel Xeon processors, complete U.2 NVMe support, and expanded PCIe options, targeting enterprise needs in virtualization, HPC, AI, and post-production environments.

QNAP TDS-h2489FU R2 Features and Components

At the heart of the TDS-h2489FU R2 are dual Intel Xeon Silver 4300-series processors, with configurations ranging from 16 to 32 cores. RAM support scales up to 1TB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM, ensuring it can handle concurrent virtual machines, high-speed data analytics, or parallel workflows without choking. The unit integrates 24 front-facing U.2 drive bays, 16 of which are NVMe-only and the remaining eight are compatible with NVMe or SATA. QNAP claims the unit can push up to 1 million IOPS for 4K random reads, especially useful for virtualized infrastructure and data-intensive use cases.

QNAP TDS-h2489FU R2

Compared to the earlier version, this revision expands hardware flexibility. It now includes four PCIe Gen 4 slots, allowing users to add high-speed network cards (25GbE or even 100GbE), Fibre Channel adapters, or additional storage interface cards. Moreover, it includes dual 25GbE SFP28 ports (via a pre-installed card) alongside four 2.5GbE RJ45 ports, giving enterprises a strong base for high-bandwidth operations. The 25GbE ports support iSER (iSCSI Extensions for RDMA) and SR-IOV, allowing faster virtualized storage transfers with lower CPU usage.

For larger deployments, the system supports massive storage expansion. With the right JBOD attachments, users can scale to over 240 additional drives via PCIe JBOD (TL-R2400PES-RP) or 256 drives through SAS JBOD (TL-R1620Sep-RP). Two internal M.2 NVMe slots are for cache or system acceleration, further improving data throughput. As expected in this class, the TDS-h2489FU R2 includes dual redundant power supplies to safeguard uptime and minimize the risk of failure in critical environments.

QNAP QNAP TDS-h2489FU R2 ZFS-Based QuTS Hero

The NAS runs QNAP’s QuTS hero OS, which is built around the ZFS file system. This adds data integrity features like copy-on-write, snapshots, and inline data deduplication/compression. It also allows for advanced SSD optimization, critical for maintaining performance and endurance in all-flash configurations.
