Today Samsung Electronics America, Inc. unveiled its new lineup of solid-state drives (SSDs) aimed directly for data center use, the 860 DCT, 883 DCT, 983 DCT, and 983 ZET. The new drives aim to address the needs of SMBs that need higher performance and capacity in the Big Data Era. The drives are also designed to take on the challenges of Super Computing, AI, and IoT.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve all organizations need to evolve with it or get left behind. While larger enterprises have several methods for dealing with new facets such as Big Data, AI, and IoT, the small to medium businesses may not be able to adopt these methods as easily. These new SSDs will give SMBs a leg up with better efficiency, higher density (that can lead to better consolidation, lower power usage and cooling, and thus a lower TCO), and higher performance. The new SSDs also come with better QoS, lower latency, and higher reliability and endurance, which is more important in the 24/7 use of the data center.

The new drives include:

  • The 860 DCT (reviewed here) is designed for servers requiring SSD-levels of sustained performance and is suitable for read-intensive workloads. It allows for a lower TCO compared to hard disk drives (HDDs) and offers high capacities up to 3.84 TB. The 860 DCT is the perfect solution for content delivery network systems and comes with a 0.20 DWPD rating.
  • The 883 DCT is designed for servers used to safeguard critical data, including power loss protection and end-to-end data protection. It offers a high QoS under the SATA interface and will be available in a number of capacities ranging from 240GB up to 3.84TB at a 0.8 DWPD rating.
  • The 983 DCT is a high-performance solution for servers using an NVMe interface, which allows for blazing-fast speeds and high responsiveness. It comes in two form factors – U.2 and M.2 – and is stated as delivering sequential read/write speeds of up to 3,000/1,900MB/s (U.2) and 3,000/1,400MB/s (M.2). The 983 DCT is ideal for real-time big data analytics applications and comes with a 0.8 DWPD rating.
  • The 983 ZET is a powerful cache memory solution that offers a new level of performance with ultra-low latency, high level of QoS, breakthrough speeds and high reliability. It is the perfect storage solution for NoSQL DB such as application workload case, and it comes with a 10 DWPD rating.
