Today Synology Inc. announced its new converged NAS server, RS18016xs+ and its expansion unit RX1216sas. The new NAS server come with a vast variety of features including expansion capacities, point-in-time data backup for enterprises, and high performance throughput. The RS18016xs+ runs DSM and comes with a 5-year warranty.

The RS18016xs+ is a 12-bay NAS Server that can scale up to 1PB in capacity and is designed to simplifying any backup strategy. The next generation NAS server is for businesses in need of a cost-efficient, scalable, and modern storage solution. Synology’s award-winning OS, DiskStation Manager, powers the new NAS server. The Synology RS18016xs+ also introduces the Btrfs file system, what Synology calls the “most advanced storage technologies to meet the management needs of modern large scale businesses.” These technologies include:

  • Built-in data integrity check detects data and file system corruption with data and meta-data checksums and improve overall stability.
  • Flexible Shared Folder/User Quota System provides comprehensive quota control on all user accounts and shared folders.
  • Advanced snapshot technology with customizable backup schedule allows up to 256 copies of shared folder backups without occupying huge storage capacity and system resources.
  • File or folder level data restoration brings convenience and saves time for users who wish to restore only the specific single file or folder.
  • Cloud Station with file versioning reduces down to half of storage consumption when compared with Ext4 file system.

When users are nearing their capacity limits that can easily scale by adding the RX1216sas providing an additional 12 bays. The RX1216sas is designed to be a Plug-n-Use device. Users just need to connect it through dual SAS cables and they can use the drives as though they were inside the RS18016xs+. The RX1216sas can also be used as a dedicated local backup for the RS18016xs+.

Features and benefits include:

  • Extreme performance: delivering over 3,900 MB/s and 348,000 IOPS throughput, RS18016xs+ provides storage and application serving to hundreds of users. With a dedicated encryption engine, RS18016xs+ boasts over 3,000 MB/s reading on encrypted shared folders, ensuring data security without any major performance drop.
  • Point-in-time data recovery: RS18016xs+ brings snapshot technology, allowing businesses to automatically capture point-in-time copies of data as frequently as every 5 minutes without occupying system resources, as well as customize the retention policy to save up to 256 recovery points on an hourly, daily or weekly basis.
  • High uptime: With support for Synology High Availability, as well as numerous redundant hardware components including redundant data paths, power supplies, system fans, and four network ports with failover support, RS18016xs+ maximize service uptime.
  • Future-ready: RS18016xs+ natively supports 6Gb/s SAS/SATA III technologies and can be upgraded with up to 32GB ECC RAM and 10GbE capabilities to ensure maximum compatibility and return on investment.
  • Seamless scalability: when storage capacity on the Synology RS18016xs+ reaches its limit, Synology RX1216sas provides an easy way to immediately scale up. Stacking up to 14 RX1216sas expansion units creates a 180-drive cluster managed from a single point of entry.
