TerraMaster has expanded its range of direct-attached storage with the release of the D1 SSD Pro, a Thunderbolt 5-compatible M.2 NVMe enclosure designed for users who rely on sustained high-speed data access in mobile or studio-based environments. The new enclosure targets professional creatives, developers, and power users who require desktop-class storage performance in a compact, portable format while prioritizing reliability and silent operation over stylistic excess.
TerraMaster D1 SSD Pro Features
The D1 SSD Pro is highlighted by its Thunderbolt 5 support for up to 80Gbps of bandwidth, a significant step up from earlier 40Gbps Thunderbolt solutions. This would put it among the fastest single-drive portable storage enclosures currently on the market, making it very useful for tasks like 8K and 4K video editing, high-resolution photo processing, and large dataset transfers, where sustained speed and low latency directly affect productivity.
The enclosure uses an Intel-certified dual-chip design that combines the Intel JHL9480 Thunderbolt controller with the JMS583 USB bridge. This architecture allows the device to operate natively across Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 3 connections, while also maintaining backward compatibility with USB4 and USB 3.x standards. As a result, the D1 SSD Pro can be used across a wide range of systems, including modern Macs, Windows PCs, and other USB-C-equipped devices, without requiring separate enclosures or adapters for different platforms.
For storage support, the D1 SSD Pro accepts a single M.2 2280 NVMe SSD and is compatible with PCIe 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 drives. TerraMaster states that the enclosure supports capacities of up to 8TB, making it suitable for large media libraries or project archives that need to travel between locations.
The new enclosure is also designed to work with newer MacBook Pro systems with M4 Pro and Max chips, as well as the Mac mini and Mac Studio. It also supports selected Windows laptops with Intel Core Ultra 200 processors and Thunderbolt 5 ports.
TerraMaster D1 SSD Pro Build
TerraMaster indicates that the chassis is CNC-machined from aerospace-grade aluminium and features an enlarged surface area to dissipate heat efficiently without active fans. This fanless approach allows the D1 SSD Pro to operate silently, even during prolonged transfers, which can be a practical advantage in recording studios, edit suites, or on-set environments where background noise is undesirable.
The enclosure weighs 300 grams and is constructed as a single-piece aluminium unit, giving it a solid feel while remaining easy to carry in a laptop bag or equipment case. Power is supplied entirely via USB-C, with an active power consumption of 8.1 watts, eliminating the need for an external power adapter.
On the software side, the device supports macOS and Windows 11 and works with commonly used file systems, including APFS, NTFS, exFAT, and EXT4.
