Toshiba today introduced new 1.8-inch hard drives using low-insertion force (LIF) SATA connectors, making the drives 10% smaller than standard microSATA 1.8-inch drives.

The new 1.8-inch drives are designed for use in devices such as tablets, external hard drives, and other consumer electronics.
The following models have been announced in the MKxx39GSL series:

  • 160GB (MK1639GSL)
  • 200GB (MK2039GSL)
  • 220GB (MK2239GSL)

The MK2239GSL is the largest capacity 1.8-inch 5mm height drive available. Other specifications of the MKxx39GSL series include a 16MB buffer and 4200RPM spindle speed. Toshiba quotes the drives with a 14db idle noise and 15db seek. The drives are capable of withstanding up to 1,500Gs of non-operational shock and 600Gs of operational shock, compared to 900Gs and 400Gs for 2.5-inch drives, respectively.

Toshiba currently has a 92% market share of the 1.8-inch drive market.

Availability

The MKxx39GSL series will be available for sampling in February.
