Lenovo Expands ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile Portfolio for AI-Ready Storage and Virtualization

AI  ◇  Enterprise

Lenovo has launched an expanded range of data storage, virtualization, and data management services. These are aimed at enterprises and mid-sized companies looking to update their infrastructure for AI and advanced application workloads. The announcement highlights new Lenovo ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile solutions, along with an enhanced data management services portfolio, to create a more unified hardware, software, and services package.

Lenovo ThinkAgile Feature Set

The portfolio provides a modern foundation for AI innovation, with a focus on high-performance storage, open virtualization platforms, and lifecycle services. These services help IT teams deploy, manage, and get more value from enterprise data.

Addressing Structural Gaps in Enterprise Data Readiness

AI is increasingly seen as a competitive advantage, but many organizations lack the necessary data management and storage infrastructure to support it. Lenovo cites Gartner research showing that 63% of organizations have not adopted the proper data management practices for AI initiatives. Meanwhile, IDC data indicates that around 80 percent of storage deployed in the last five years uses slower hard-drive systems that are not optimized for AI workloads.

Evolving needs in virtualization and containerization exacerbate these challenges. Customers prefer open, flexible solutions instead of tightly integrated, single-vendor ones. The mix of legacy storage, broken data management processes, and evolving virtualization requirements creates operational risks for companies trying to scale analytics and AI.

Lenovo stresses that customers are actively replacing outdated infrastructure with open, modern solutions. These aim to address disruptions in virtualization platforms and better prepare data for demanding workloads. The new offerings focus on enhancing security, deployment ease, and workload performance, enabling organizations to optimize applications and derive greater value from their data assets.

Virtualization, AI, and Storage: Flexibility and Choice

Today’s IT teams must deliver performance, simplicity, and scalability while also improving cyber resilience. Many enterprises need a combination of on-premises and hybrid deployment models to keep sensitive data in place for compliance while allowing AI workloads to run where they are most efficient.

To meet these needs, Lenovo has introduced new ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile Enterprise offerings designed for AI, virtualization, and storage challenges.

Lenovo ThinkSystem DS Series Storage Arrays

The Lenovo ThinkSystem DS Series includes all-flash, secure Storage Area Network (SAN) block storage platforms built for virtualized environments. These systems are designed to be easy to deploy and manage, offering predictable performance and better storage efficiency for mixed virtualization workloads.

By switching from disk-based to all-flash architectures, the DS Series meets the latency and throughput demands of AI and modern applications. The arrays serve as a practical upgrade for organizations that are still heavily invested in hard drive storage and need to consolidate and modernize.

Lenovo ThinkAgile FX Series

The Lenovo ThinkAgile FX Series is an open-architecture hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution. It supports seamless switching between certain HCI software stacks without needing a complete hardware overhaul.

This feature aims to provide better investment protection and flexibility for organizations that expect changes in their hypervisor or HCI platform. The FX Series lets IT teams adjust their software layers according to evolving licensing, performance, or ecosystem needs while maintaining their hardware footprint.

Lenovo ThinkAgile MX Series for Disaggregated Storage with Microsoft Azure Local

As an HCI integrated appliance provider for Microsoft environments, Lenovo is expanding the ThinkAgile MX Series. This supports disaggregated external Fibre Channel SAN storage for Microsoft Azure Local deployments. This approach enables customers to pair Azure Local compute with enterprise-grade external SAN arrays, enhancing storage scalability and reliability for virtualization use cases.

The disaggregated model is ideal for customers seeking Azure-consistent operations at the edge or in the data center while continuing to leverage existing Fibre Channel SAN investments. It targets enterprises that need higher capacity, performance, or availability than traditional node-local storage can offer.

Configurations of the Lenovo ThinkAgile MX now include integrated NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 GPUs. This addition speeds up AI capabilities in Microsoft Azure Local environments. This configuration focuses on inference workloads, where GPU acceleration can significantly enhance throughput and responsiveness for models deployed near data generation.

NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000

By integrating HCI with GPU acceleration, Lenovo aims to enable organizations to run AI services alongside core virtualized workloads on a single platform, rather than creating separate silos for AI and traditional applications.

Lenovo ThinkAgile HX Series for AI with Nutanix Enterprise AI

The Lenovo ThinkAgile HX Series, built on Nutanix software, now includes Nutanix Enterprise AI (NAI) to support AI workloads in virtualized and distributed container environments. This integration enables customers to securely deploy, run, and scale AI models more consistently using the same Nutanix stack already used for other enterprise workloads.

With NAI on ThinkAgile HX, IT teams can streamline model deployment pipelines, enhance governance, and leverage existing Nutanix operations and automation for AI services. The aim is to reduce time-to-value for AI projects while simplifying the management of separate infrastructure for data science and production systems.

Lifecycle and Data Management Services for AI and Hybrid Cloud

Having the proper infrastructure alone won’t close the data readiness gap. Lenovo pairs the new hardware platforms with a broader range of hybrid cloud and data lifecycle services to prepare data and environments for AI and next-generation applications.

Deployment and Consumption Flexibility

Lenovo Deployment Services for ThinkAgile and ThinkSystem are designed to accelerate time-to-value by simplifying installation, configuration, and integration with existing environments. These services help IT teams deploy new storage and HCI platforms more quickly while adhering to best practices.

For procurement and consumption flexibility, Lenovo offers storage acquisition options through both traditional purchases and its TruScale consumption-based model. TruScale allows organizations to align infrastructure costs more closely with their actual usage and growth patterns while enjoying enterprise-grade performance and features.

Hybrid Cloud Advisory and Migration Services

Lenovo Hybrid Cloud Advisory Services assist customers in designing and aligning on-premises and hybrid environments with specific business needs, including compliance, data protection, operational efficiency, and regulatory standards. The goal is to create a reference architecture and roadmap that match workloads to the best execution venue, whether on-premises or in the cloud.

Lenovo’s Migration Services focus on shifting data and workloads into these updated architectures while ensuring reliability and minimizing disruption. These services target organizations looking for the agility of the cloud while maintaining the stability and control of existing on-premises systems, particularly where latency, data ownership, or cost predictability matter.

Expanded Data Management Services and Premier Enhanced Storage Support

As part of its expanded Data Management Services, Lenovo has added Premier Enhanced Storage Support. This service tier offers a specialized, storage-focused support experience for IT teams managing critical workloads.

Premier Enhanced Storage Support includes direct access to Lenovo experts, proactive monitoring of storage environments, and advice on performance optimization and incident response. The goal is to reduce risk, increase availability, and provide a more predictable operational experience for storage infrastructure supporting AI and other essential services.

Lenovo’s latest updates to the ThinkSystem and ThinkAgile portfolios, along with expanded services, aim to help organizations modernize legacy infrastructure for AI, virtualization, and hybrid cloud. By highlighting all-flash SANs, open HCI, and GPU configurations, along with lifecycle services, Lenovo is addressing hardware and operational gaps that have hindered AI adoption in environments reliant on outdated storage and fragmented data management.
