At AWS re:Invent in San Jose, NetApp announced a new feature that helps organizations simplify and improve their workflows by connecting Amazon Web Services (AWS) AI and Analytics services directly to their NetApp data, whether in the cloud or on-premises. With the latest enhancements to NetApp Workload Factory, AWS customers can expect a more innovative, faster, and more proactive way to manage Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP (FSx for ONTAP) environments.

Amazon S3 Access Points for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP
Amazon S3 Access Points for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP enable customers to accelerate AI and analytics projects. This happens by allowing file data stored in FSx for ONTAP to be accessed via the S3 API by AWS’s wide range of AI/ML and analytics services. The data remains in place and is fully accessible for reading and writing through file protocols.
Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage and Services at NetApp, stated that the new integration of FSx for ONTAP with Amazon S3 Access Points allows connections to over 100 exabytes of enterprise data stored on NetApp systems. He mentioned that this development improves capabilities for complex use cases like generative AI and analytics. It does this by allowing direct integration of cloud services with enterprise applications and data architecture. Tiwana highlighted that introducing S3 Access Points greatly benefits both FSx for ONTAP and on-premises ONTAP users.
Linking AWS Services and ISV Applications to FSx for ONTAP
NetApp offers a first-party data storage service built on AWS, positioning it uniquely to help customers accelerate modern workloads in the cloud. By using Amazon S3 Access Points with FSx for ONTAP, customers can link S3-based AWS services and ISV applications to FSx for ONTAP file systems as if they were S3 buckets.
Built-in replication features in ONTAP help businesses move their data across hybrid cloud environments, making it easy for FSx for ONTAP customers to connect to their on-premises data. With this capability, file data stored in FSx for ONTAP is accessible to various artificial intelligence, machine learning, serverless compute, and analytics services and applications that work with S3. Users can manage and streamline how applications or users access data by creating access points with specific names and permissions tailored to each.
By eliminating the need to transfer data out of FSx for ONTAP to use AI services, customers also benefit from built-in cyber resilience features, including real-time ransomware detection and integrated snapshots.
