NetApp has announced the acquisition of Talon Storage in an effort to enhance their cloud data services portfolio. Talon Storage is a software-defined storage solutions company that focuses on helping enterprises centralize and consolidate their IT storage infrastructure to the public clouds. NetApp indicates that the addition of Talon’s FAST software, combined with their own Cloud Volumes technology, will help customers centralize data in the cloud while still maintaining the benefits of the branch office environment.

NetApp indicates that the addition of Talon’s FAST software, combined with their own Cloud Volumes technology, will help customers centralize data in the cloud while still maintaining the benefits of the branch office environment.
Talon FAST is a cloud-data software based solution that provides a “Global File Cache” service for ROBO workloads. This allows for file server consolidation into a secure, globally accessible file system on the company’s public cloud platform. Talon indicates that it will eliminate the need for branch office backups while increasing productivity and enabling global collaboration via distributed file-locking. Moreover, FAST takes advantage of “compression, streaming, and delta differencing” to move the data in increments between branch office and datacenter. This is all designed to give a high-performance experience for end users.
NetApp says that Talon’s software will integrate with NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP, Cloud Volumes Service and Azure NetApp Files solutions, which will help their customers move to the public cloud much faster and at a better total cost of ownership.
